Press Release - Successful Launch of the 30th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of Social Work in China and Peking Unviersity
The 30th Anniversary of the Re-establishment of Social Work in China and in Peking University was successfully held on Nov 1st – 2nd, 2018 at Peking University. The remarkable two-day event, attracting over 300 social work scholars and practitioners from different countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong and the mainland of China, was the joint effort of Peking University, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Peking University-The Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre
“Blood is thicker than water”, with deep affection for the people of China, the Department of Applied Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University took the lead in the re-establishment of social work education in China in the 80’s. Together with other organizations and institutions in Hong Kong, as well as the Asia Pacific Association of Social Work Education, the Department launched a seminar at Peking University in 1988, followed by sending its faculties to offer the programme of “Introduction to Social Work" in China.
The symposium aimed at reviewing the hard-won achievements of China social work in the past 30 years, reflecting on the challenges encountered in the process of social work reconstruction and development, and actively exploring the effective pathways of future professional development.
The 30th Anniversary opened ceremoniously on Nov 1st at Peking University Yingjie Exchange Center with the warm support of honorable guests including Ms. Lyu Xiaoli, Deputy Director of Bureau of Social Organization of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Prof. Jiang Langlang, Member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party and Head of Office of Publicity of Peking University, Prof. Angelina Yuen, Senior Advisor to the President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Wang Sibin, Deputy Director of National Social Work Degree Education Steering Committee, Prof. Xie Lizhong, Secretary-General of National Social Work Education Steering Committee, Prof. Xu Yongxiang, President of China Association of Social Work Education, Prof. Annamaria Campanini, President of International Association of Schools of Social Work, Mr. Liu Weineng, former Vice President of Civil Administration School of the Ministry of Civil Affairs, Prof. Lu Shizhen, Honorary President of the Institute of the Youth Studies at China Youth University, Mr. Liu Conglong, Director of the Rural Social Insurance Department of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, and the key representatives of Zeshan Foundation, Si Yuan Foundation and Victor and William Fung Foundation.
The main theme of the symposium was further extended into 3 thematic topics in Social Policy and Social Work, Social Work Education and Practice and Social Work Research. Marvelous speeches were delivered by Prof. Wang Sibin, Prof. Angelina Yuen, Prof. Lena Dominelli of Faculty of Social Sciences at Stirling University, Prof. Michael Sherraden of Washington University (St. Louis), Prof. Chan Ko-ling of Department of Applied Social Science at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Prof. Xu Yongxiang, and many other renowned speakers from the academia and social work profession.
The public has gained proper understanding of the social work profession through thorough examination of the social environment, which has undergone social and economic transformation since the reform and opening up of the country and the challenging process of China social work profession re-establishment. Social work profession is well acknowledged and recognized. It is also with the unremitting efforts of researchers and practitioners that indigenous social work theories and models have been developed. Insightful international dialogues also contributed to the positive development of social work in nearby countries and regions.
The two-day symposium was well attended with social work educators, scholars and practitioners gathered together. The speakers at the closing ceremony sincerely extended their best wishes to social work profession for another milestone in the next 10 years to come.
